Cynthia Ann Stephanie Lauper was never going to be a name to cut it in the music business but Cyndi Lauper certainly was. A New York City native (born in Astoria, Queens in 1953), Lauper has been singing and performing for over 30 years with great success following early disappointment. Lauper’s first performances were in the early seventies when she sang with cover bands Doc West and Flyer before damaging her vocal cords in 1977. Informed by her doctors that she would never sing again, Lauper recovered and joined saxophonist John Turi to form the band Blue Angel. A self-titled album was released in 1980 but failed to make any great impact despite widespread critical acclaim which prompted Lauper to comment that “it went lead”. Blue Angel broke up in 1982 leaving Lauper to rotate between waitressing, working in shops and singing in local New York bars. At one of these gigs, Lauper met David Wolff who became her manager and got the singer a recording deal with Portrait Records. A debut solo album in 1983 entitled “She’s so Unusual” saw Lauper’s career skyrocket as the girl from New York scored four Billboard Hot 100 top five hits. The worldwide success of “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” was quickly followed by “Time After Time” then “She-Bop” and lastly “All Through the Night” and saw Lauper crowned Best New Artist at the 1985 Grammy Awards. More success was to come Lauper’s way in 1986 with the release of her second album “True Colors” which included the number one single of the same name and Top Three hit “Change of Heart”. In a career spanning three decades, Cyndi Lauper has sold over 50 million albums and more than 20 million singles as well as picking up Grammy, Tony and Emmy Awards and has been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Cyndi Lauper continues to record and tour to this date and is truly one of the iconic pop stars of not just yesterday but today.
